Medicine:
Very cool article from the New Yorker on anesthesia. I haven’t bought Katie Cole-Adams’s book yet, and might start with this one. But I like how this article (and apparently Cole-Adams’s book) explore the philosophical aspects of being put to sleep, rather than the clinical side. Some scary reports of people being “awake” during a surgery. It does appear that consciousness is a spectrum. We see this in so called “conscious sedation” in the ER.
Write it down:
I haven’t had much opportunity yet to use these pens, as my 6-year old twins have commandeered them. But check out these erasable pens from PILOT. Using the right paper, these pens really do write quite nicely and erase without a trace. Tim Ferriss says to pair them with this notebook, to digitally store any page of notes you take. I haven’t taken the plunge on the $30 notebook yet, but it looks very cool.
Movement:
One of my favorite ways to spread short sessions of exercise around the day/week is with kettlebells. Here is a nice summary from Mark’s Daily Apple. I know I always link to MDA, and that is only because it is the best website on the Internet.
Men should start with 35-40lb and women with 20-25lb. The kettlebell swing alone, when done with proper form, is enough to get a full body workout. But jump around on the links to see other exercises (squats, deadlifts, jefferson curls, turkish get ups). I keep two 40b and one 50b around the house,
Try this one: when studying, just walk around the house carrying a kettlebell in one hand and a book or iPod with lectures in the other hand. So many possibilities.
Economy:
Looks like the healthcare industry has now surpassed all other industries in number of US Jobs. Check out this graph from a Twitter link:
