Community:
• Jordan Peterson’s 3rd Rule is to “Make friends with people who want the best for you.” Jim Rohn said “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
• Psychology (and real life business industry) studies show that one bad apple can ruin the productivity of a small group. It is possible but not as likelythat one very positive person entering a group can lift up the overall success of a group.
• Look around you and make sure you are surrounding yourself with friends who want the best for you, who challenge you, and who are loyal to you. I am still very close to a driven group of friends who never stop joking, competing, harassing, but always supporting each other.
• Cool thing is, you will be motivated to fulfill your own potential, to represent for that group and be a positive influence back on them. The feeling you get when you see someone do a good deed, be generous or altruistic, is called elevation, transcendence or awe. An expansive feeling that something bigger than you exists in the world; well studied especially by Jonathan Haidt. The probability you can witness or create it in the hospital today is roughly 99%. Be that positive influence today.
Row, Row:
• Ok I usually try to recommend exercise that does not require special equipment. Most gyms do have a C2 or other type of rowing machine. I had always seen people use these but didn’t see a reason to incorporate it into training. I was wrong. A 500 meter sprint on the row machine will kick your butt.
• A great finishing exercise, you can also throw in 500m sprints a couple of times during your workout, between sets. You could stop by the HSC gym, run in and do two quick 500m sprints back to back, then head back to the hospital barely sweating. Total time, 5 minutes.
Worldly:
• Forbes pieceon a couple who traveled the world on $1500 / month. Amirah and Jarrell did a little freelance artistic work while traveling … for 5 years! Amirah even wrote a book about how to travel frugally. They documented their adventures on Twitter. The pics alone are worth checking out in the article.
Unsubscribe:
• Simple action that can improve sanity when your email inbox is crazy. Usually in the middle of a night shift, I occasionally just login to email and scan through junk mail, unsubscribing from everything. Once you are down to only one or two (or ten) a day, unsubscribe every time you get one. Heck, unsubscribe from PofW if you don’t read it. Tidy up!
• Also helps to have a second or third email address you give out to companies when you must, then you won’t get the marketing to your main account.
Take a Walk:
• Great old postby Mark Sisson on benefits of walking. Numerous scientific articles have shown independent benefit to cardiovascular health and overall mortality with walking. The famous thinkers highlighted in this post know how to harness the creative potential of a solid saunter (Thoreau).
• Try walking meditation on The Medical Mile. The Kierkegaard quote at the bottom is fantastic. Walk long enough, and “everything will be alright.”
• Don’t be afraid to walk in the cold this winter. Just picture a fire burning in your abdomen. You can even throw a sprint in at the end: Don’t be a wimp, you know who you are (hint: Wandrew Ithington).
Quote:
Above all, do not lose your desire to walk. Everyday, I walk myself into a state of well-being & walk away from every illness. I have walked myself into my best thoughts, and I know of no thought so burdensome that one cannot walk away from it. But by sitting still, & the more one sits still, the closer one comes to feeling ill. Thus if one just keeps on walking, everything will be all right.
– Soren Kierkegaard
