Love:
Wedlock comes from 13th century middle English: wedd (pledge) and lac (activity). To commit to someone is to pledge activity, ideally as a daily practice. Sometimes it is difficult and involves sacrifice (Hebrew word for sacrifice is korban, which means to be near / draw close). When you feel scarcity in life (time, money, energy, patience), remember that love, unlike other resources, multiplies when it is shared. It’s science. Share some love today.
Move:
George Bosse, ER attending, challenged me to walk up and down the stairs in the hospital. After taking two at a time for 7 floors, I had to slow down to the top to prevent syncope. This is a brief, convenient HIIT session that can be done at work. Martin Gibala has tested his one minute workout on subjects using stairs in the home.
Haste:
Just like football is a game of inches, I often think of life as a game of minutes. With 4 kids, we plan activities with just minutes to spare to get everyone to their destinations on time. This sense of hurrying causes a lot of cortisol release (stress). Sometimes a sense of fulfillment accompanies the completion of all the tasks. But children do not appreciate crossing off to-do list items.
Amy Hollingsworth wrote a book about her friend Mister Rogers’s and his philosophy on interacting with children (and life in general). The first lesson she learned from him was simply to not hurry. “Hurriedness causes a child’s soul to be hard and resistant.” Children who watched Mr Roger’s Neighborhood showed improved tolerance of delay, ie. patience. It is refreshing to watch a child go at his own pace. Try with your child (or loved one or patient) today.
Stocks for Sale:
The Dow Jones and NASDAQ have not yet “recovered” from the drop early this month. William Bernstein, MD says young people saving for retirement should pray for a market crash, to purchase their nest eggs fire sale prices. A prolonged bull market is bad news for the young investor. Of course the current bear market is great news for folks just entering retirement. Bottom line: corrections in the market are normal and actually desired early on in your financial journey.
Pressure:
The Instant Pot strikes again. Here is an extremely simple recipe for cooking brisket in less than 2 hours. I cook brisket on the Big Green Egg, sous vide, oven, reverse sear, etc. So I have high respect for this cut of meat and do not want to be a heretic. But we tried out this recipe and loved the results. The brisket came out more like a roast , but an hour in the oven with a dry rub gave it a classic, flavorful crust.
Laugh:
Not actually Bill Murray: But look on Twitter for @BillMurray. One of my favorite posts: “That awkward moment when you leave the shop without buying anything and all you can think is, ‘act natural, you’re innocent’.”

And so for me, being quiet and slow is being myself, and that is my gift.
