Wisdom from a patient:

• Anthem is taking deserved heat for denying payment for emergency medical care. The standard of the prudent layperson: one “who possesses an average knowledge of health and medicine who reasonably expects the absence of immediate medical attention to result in” jeopardy of health, body part or organ functions.
• Think about these concerns when you are interacting with patients. They [usually] truly believe something is wrong and have come to you vulnerably for help.

More from Happy MD:

• The electronic medical record is not a problem, it is a dilemma. Unlike a problem, a dilemma does not have a solution. But you can have a strategy to cope with a dilemma. This could be any inevitable hindrance you face at work.
• Drummond gives excellent advice on how to optimize interaction with the EMR.
1. Have a positive attitude: it is part of our jobs and we cannot eliminate it. 2. become a superuser (my favorite bit of advice, make the weakness your strength, guerrilla warfare). 3. Study efficient peers. 4. Chart the limited data set: (a) get paid b) medicolegal protection.

Sleep Stoicism:

• Have you overslept in the morning or woken up from an unplanned nap overcome with guilt? You can’t change it, just accept it and forgive yourself. Sleep has countless health benefits and you won’t sleep if you don’t need it. Especially important post call (and pre-call).

Posture:

• Having neck / upper back pain from sitting all day or stooping over an OR table? Try some chin tucks. This exercise strengthens the anterior cervical flexor muscles and offsets the often overactive trapezius muscle. This is a preventive exercise rather than treatment. Try to do a few sets of 10 every day.

Snack:

• KetoBark. Choc Zero is making chocolate with almost no net carbs, keto-friendly. The 70% chocolate is a bit bland, but the KetoBark is quite good.
