• Hello everyone! Exciting news this month! After several months of preparation, the Journal of Wellness is now live and accepting submissions. JWellness is a peer-reviewed, open access, journal that publishes original research articles as well as review articles in all areas of medical, physical and psychological wellness.  We welcome contributions from all fields therein, including the humanities. There will be no profits, and no fees for authors or readers. This is the first journal of its kind.

• The UofL library and the UofL Department of Emergency Medicine are generously supporting the journal.
• We so far have two websites: The submission page, and a landing page (journalofwellness.com). This week we published the first article, introducing the journal and its mission. We are fortunate to have a very experiences editorial board, and will apply for indexing in the DOAJ and Pubmed.
• Please check out the sites, spread the word, and consider submitting your wellness research to the journal.

Here are your weekly ideas for wellness practice:

PtoER.com

• Dr. Ted Naiman created a simple, extremely useful website where you can calculate the Protein to Energy Ratio of whatever you are eating. Simple concept, just looking at how many grams of protein relative to how many grams of (fat + carbs). We have covered this before. Check out the website http://ptoer.com. Plug in your snack or meal. It shows a nice graph with comparable foods. The higher number the better.

Keystrokes:

• The Happy MD is making great arguments again. This particular advice applies to anyone, medical or non-medical. We all have become too dependent on technology, and spend too much time interacting with devices. I love point 2, sections i.-iv. 4 different reasons we write such huge medical notes in the US compared to other countries. He then follows with 4 possible solutions.
• The best one is so simple: RFID (ID card tap and go) login to your computer workstation. How do we not have this in every job in the US?

GMB:

• GMB (gold medal body) is an exercise program based on gymnastic movements. They offer a lot of free content, short emails with mobility and other fitness tips. This post focuses on what happens as we age, and how to prevent the loss of strength, flexibility, and motor control.
• The solution: don’t stop moving as the years go by, cycle your training (periodization), and tackle your weaknesses now. No, it is notgoing to become easier to get healthy next week, after this rotation, next year after the promotion. Right now is the time to start.

Calm in Choas:

• Valuable article on how to stay calm in chaos, based on Stoic principles. This is one of those posts you should print and keep on your desk for a monthly read. It is powerful that all of these stoic exercises and ideas are being tested and given fancy, sciency names in the last few decades. They highlight the sacredness of time and importance of honesty.
• Don’t forget Rorke T. Denver’s quote: Calm is Contagious. This is a scientific fact in the ER resuscitation room. *Frenzy is also contagious of course.

+R:

• The book Other People’s Habits is a short read full of practical tips for parenting, succeeding at work, and just getting along with people. It is based on the Twain quote: “Nothing so needs reforming as other people’s habits.”
• The author Aubrey Daniels studied workplaces and found that job stress is rarely caused by the work itself, but from performing under negative reinforcement; ie stress comes not from the work, but from what happens to people when they do the work.
• 10+ years ago he was writing about the Losada ratio: The ideal positive to negative comments should be 3:1 or greater. Works in classrooms and in businesses.
• The book has many pearls on gratitude. He urges the reader to “Tell people they are appreciated, and tell them often.”
• One study showed that if 5% of a team positively provides reinforcement, it can change the whole team dynamic. FIVE percent! This about this positive feedback cascade on your next day at work. Just like calm, positivity is contagious!
